A lot of controversy has arisen over the recently released trailer for Death Note, an upcoming live action movie from Netflix. As we know, live action anime adaptations in the past have not received good reviews from critics or fans. For instance, one film we will never forgive or forget: Dragon Ball Evolution.
For those who are new and may not know what Death Note is about – here is a quick summary. Death Note follows a teenager named Light Yagami, a normal college student with a normal life. That is until he discovers an odd notebook lying on the ground. He soon discovers that the notebook has magic powers and that if someone’s name is written on it while the writer imagines that person’s face, he or she will die.
The Netflix adaptation was already under heavy scrutiny with the announcement of the cast back in July of last year. Now with the release of the first trailer it seems most of our fears may have become a reality. For starters, the characters have little to no resemblance to the actual characters from the series.
Though this is not necessarily a bad thing as long as they can portray the characters as how we know and love them. Next is the changing of the names; from Light Yagami to Light Turner, for example. This isn’t a big deal for some but to those who crave a real adaptation;,it does feel cringe-worthy and leaves much to be desired. Not to mention the fact that this is a movie and not a series which means possible scenes will be rushed through along with various plot holes that might take place due to time restraints.
I realize that I may be nitpicking, but when I watched the trailer for the first time I didn’t get the vibe or the feeling that i was watching the Death Note anime. It felt underwhelming and just like another Netflix drama.
Even though things may be off to a rocky start for the movie I feel judgement should be reserved until the actual film is released.
The Death Note movie will debut on Netflix later this year on August 25. Check out the first trailer below
